People used to have to make bread by hand. It would take long and you never had enough bread to last more than a couple weeks. Making bread was hard, long, an done mess up and you ruined a loaf.

They would mix the ingredients in, then let the bread rise for several hours, then finally bake it. Even after all that hard work they would still have to cut it. If you cut to many slices though it would go stale so they only sliced as they needed it.

By having his machine he would help no only house wives but millions of people the trouble of having to slice there bread over and over and never getting the right amount.
